Easy steps to keep your heart healthy

Your heart is one of the most important organs in your body, so taking care of it is high priority. It’s the hardest working muscle in your body, providing oxygen and nutrients to every part of your body 24 hours a day. Here are some things you may not know about your heart and some easy steps to keep it healthy.

Did you know that sugar is worse for your heart than fat?

Sugar causes inflammation and an increase in plaque and/or micro-tears that injure the artery walls. That being said, to maintain a healthy heart you should make sure your diet consists of whole, unprocessed foods and limit your sugar intake.

Besides diet there are many other ways to maintain your heart health including,

1. Get physically active

2. Maintain a healthy weight

3. Moderate alcohol consumption

4. No smoking

5. Optimize Your Vitamin D Level

6. Be sure to take high quality omega-3 animal fats

7. Monitor your Iron Levels

8. Manage Your Stress Levels with Healthy Emotional Outlets (people who reported feeling stressed were 27% more likely to have a heart attack, stress raises blood pressure and levels of “bad” cholesterol, researchers also liken that to the effect of smoking 5 cigarettes a day.

Did you know regular chiropractic can also improve your heart health?

  1. Chiropractic lowers blood pressure (studies show a significant improvement in blood pressure when chiropractors adjust the 1st vertebra, called the Atlas).
  2. It improves nerve function of the heart – the autonomic  tone, and it impacts the heart, lungs, gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, bladder, sex organs and just about every other part of the body.
  3. It decreases blood markers of inflammation – the more inflammation, the greater your risk of cardiovascular events.
  4. It also improves heart rate variability – the more your heartbeat varies, the longer you will live. Many patients with severe heart issues have problems in this area.
  5. Chiropractic helps decrease chest pain – millions of hospital visits for chest pain can be avoided by referral or chiropractic care. Chest pain is often musculoskeletal in nature. Costochondritis, rib misalignment, or thoracic vertebrae subluxation are all causes of chest pain and shortness of breath that will respond to chiropractic care.
  6. It improves lung function – chiropractic care has been proven effective in patients with asthma, emphysema, or general poor lung function has been linked to heart failure.

Fun Fact

When the body is at rest, it takes only 6 seconds for the blood to go from the heart to the lungs and back, only 8 seconds for it to go to the brain and back, and only 16 seconds for it to reach the toes and travel all the way back to the heart.
